This is a post I've been meaning to write since a sorcerer went down to -11 hp a couple of weeks ago. Cool

It's worth reading the 'Death' section on p18 of the PFS Guide, but it basically boils down to the fact that if your character dies, he must be brought back to life during or at the end of the session, or he is dead forever. Most of the time at lower levels this will be via a raise dead spell (if at all).

There are two ways to pay for this. One is via Prestige Points; a raise dead costs 16 PP. The other is to pay 5,450 gp. An important point is that the party can pool gold (including the gold received at the end of a scenario) to get a comrade raised, but only the dead PC's PP can be used to get him brought back to life. Also, you must pay in only PP or only gold; you can't pay 8 PP and 2,725 gp for example.

An additional complication is that a raised PC comes back with two negative levels. Getting rid of each of these requires a casting of restoration at a cost of 4 PP or 1,380 gp (the same rules apply on sharing the cost with others). Although these don't need to be cast immediately, a PC has fairly stiff penalties until the negative levels are removed.

So, to get a dead character raised and returned to full capabilities costs one of the following combinations:

1) 24 PP
2) 20 PP & 1,380 gp
3) 16 PP & 2,760 gp
4) 5,450 gp & 8 PP
5) 6,830 gp & 4 PP
6) 8,210 gp

The picture changes a bit once PCs can cast some of these spells, or resurrection is in reach, but that'll do for now.

As the group has now suffered a death, and the party will soon start getting enough gold and prestige to make raise dead viable, it might be worth thinking about making an agreement at the start of a scenario to pool gold to raise dead comrades at the end, if that's a commitment you're happy to make.
