This may be old news, but apparently a number of GMs use 1" gridded flipchart pads as disposable battlemaps, as an alternative to more expensive RPG-specific solutions.

For example, this one looks like a good option:

£17.09 (inc. VAT) for 200 sheets of 23"x33" paper (I assume, maybe 22"x32") seems like a good deal to me. Even having my tact-tiles, I might be tempted, especially if someone wanted to split the pack with me. Any takers?
