I was just looking over the Synthesist rules in Ultimate Magic, and while I am aware that "the mechanics of the synthesist" is a topic of hot debate on the forums, a few salient points caught my attention:
Quote:
The synthesist directs all of the eidolon’s actions while fused, perceives through its senses, and speaks through its voice, as the two are now one creature.
Quote:
The synthesist also gains access to the eidolon’s special abilities and the eidolon’s evolutions.
Quote:
While fused with his eidolon, the synthesist can use all of his own abilities and gear.
Looking at the first two points, note that the synthesist counts one creature, not two (i.e. a single composite entity, not one creature inside the other). The eidolon's evolutions are applied to the summoner's statline, modified with the eidolon's ability scores and BAB.
The important implication of this concerns the third point: the synthesist can use his/her own abilities and gear, but can only if the eidolon possesses apprpriate limbs to do so. The synthesist does not have limbs that operate independently of those of the eidolon, as the two are stated to constitute a single entity, with all of the features of the eidolon's form and evolutions applied to the summoner. Hence, a synthesist cannot use a ranged weapon while fused unless the eidolon possesses the limbs (arms) evolution and is holding it, nor can the summoner cast spells with somatic components unless the eidolon has a hand free. The two do not count as two superimposed entities, but are explicitly stated to be a single creature.
