**New Games Club Venue!!! (and it great!)**Hi All,
We have good news, we have a new venue for Monday nights. The Chester Hangman Has an upstairs function room more usually known for rock nights, but when cleared out of drunken peoples it is much bigger than you expect. Maybe not as big as the Deva back room, but certainly as big as the lit areas!
It will take a bit of time to get used to I'm sure, but they have said we can bring chairs and tables up from down stairs if necessary.
They are charging the same amount and seem really happy to have us there, the manager welcomed us with open arms (metaphorically).

There is I don't think it's charged for. I always assumed it was free but for customers. I don't drive though so I can't say for sure.

can someone confirm on Monday whether there is parking?

There is a bit of parking, but I imagine it's a case of get there early. From previous society bookings I've attended in that room it has been necessary for those friends of mine encumbered with automobiles to find a bit of space on city road, which is a small effort really.
In the past it's been necessary to remind the management that the room has been booked and to please open it up for us, but no one is perfect.
We will be paying more though, in drinks. But a price hike in that or subs would be necessitated by anywhere. Well done to Tess and Ian for finding a replacement so soon!

There is limited parking out front, and if not on city road. It is all free.
Drinks are probably a bit more expensive, coke is £1 a glass.
Room should be plenty big enough, only problem will be tables and chairs which we may have to bring some up from downstairs but management are fine with us doing that. In the end its significantly cheaper then anywhere else we found, close to the station and big enough. Most places can not accommodate what we need.

assumes you will not be requiring a lift home in the cold, windy and rain persistant weeks ahead of us?

Just to confirm YES. there is parking for around 10 cars directly in front of the venue and there are parking bays either side of City Road all of which are free after 6pm.

Do we know what the policy is on food there at all?
I assume the £1 price is for a half pint of coke?

They have crisps at the bar.

We didnt ask about food, they do crisps but nothing more. For tonight assume no hot food but sweets will be ok. There will be a new set of club rules discussed at a meeting next week

Should we combine that with the AGM? It's almost due anyway and it would cut down the number of meetings we are required to have.

The meeting will be quick, I just want to update everyone on the reasons for move etc so rumours dont start. If tonight is busy I will do it tonight. Agm should be with the new comitee after xmas.
Yes £1 is for a half, its standard pub prices and cheaper then the alternative venues.
Just so everyone knows one of the new rules is going to be an instant ban for anyone bringing their own drinks into the club other then water. That includes drinks bought with food externally.

Have they confirmed that people bringing their own water is OK? I'd hate to assume anything...

Good point they havnt.

Well, they can't legally charge for tapwater, so they won't be losing out if people bring bottled tapwater from home, like we do every week.

I believe this is actually a myth - although in my quick googling I can't find any authoratitive sources to verify this.

They can say that the they do not consider the tap water fit for drinking and refuse to sell it to you on H&S grounds I believe. But thats it.
I would rather no one brings any drinks until that question has been resolved, there were not that many other choices and none within our price range.

Yes they can:
| Quote: | | But these assertions are pure hokum. The truth is that in Britain there is no legal requirement on restaurants to provide free tap water to customers. Some pubs and other premises permitted to sell alcohol may have a clause in their licence that does require them to offer free tap water, but it's on a localised basis only. |
Please can we clarify where we stand before making assumptions.

It's not a problem, if you think it is going to be such a big issue, we will just leave our drinks in the car tonight until some-one has had a chance to ask.

We're not going to make a fuss about it or anything.
| Quote: | | Please can we clarify where we stand before making assumptions. |
Surely we are allowed to have a discussion on our previous experience and knowledge (and i am willing to accept that knowledge may be incorrect)?
Sorry, but there have been a couple of posts on the boards over the last couple of days that seemed very... dictatorial? proscriptive? Authoritarian? and it's making me defensive.

Sorry, that wasn't meant to sound 'dictatorial' although I can see it was a bit blunt in retrospect. I also didn't realise that a couple of people got in ahead of me in replying, making it look even worse. No offence was intended.
I just wanted to make sure nobody (including Ian) assumed that something was OK when it could lead to a misunderstanding. I'd imagine that it's almost certainly OK, but we should check first.
I doubt I'll make it tonight.

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2003/ukpga_20030017_en_1 I've skimmed this and it seems that the person granting the license to sell alcohol may include a clause about free water, so it is up to them. Most landlords and barstaff who have chipped into debates seem under the impression that they are obliged to do so. It may be a myth that there is a legal requirement for all pubs in the UK to provide free tap water, but it is a very widely held one. It may also be offered as a matter of courtesy, but I imagine that it is on the understanding that tap water isn't the only thing being ordered by the customer or their party.

It seemed to work pretty well. I think the shape of the room keeps the sound from traveling across it so much, so we didn't have to shout to make ourselves heard. Tables were a bit sparse. I think you need 1 and ½ big tables per D&D game at the very least, but I think these can be arranged by just getting there early and asking.

Seemed OK to me - there wasn't much crowding, tables being the only possible minus (and as we can take these from downstairs as needed, no real issue). There wasn't quite a full turnout, or at least it didn't feel like it (at my parents, so don't have numbers with me), but that might have been cos it's more or less split into 3 sections, so hard to judge how many were there.

I know for a fact that there were at least 20 there (the 16 I collected, plus yourself, Shell-Matt, Wolves Mat and Other Rob). We coped with that level fine, but another 10 or so and we would feel the strain.
The two largest problems are the lighting and the tables, and both it seems could be easily corrected. I am more than happy to spend the future here (though having a barman that doesn't drink is just odd!)

1)having a venue is this best thing about this place.
2)landlord/barman was very accomodating.
3)Can we establish any problems with any (positive) solutions we can come up with to ensure everybody is happy, maybe then we can compile a list to give to the hangman to see if they can "help with any of them."
problems with possible solutions thus far:
a) Lighting in last third of room. i) Can we bring lamp to use in socket? ii) can hangman provide one?
b) Tables, can we arrange for tables to be brought up at start of night?
how many do we need?
I personally think that the last third (where we were playing) could host another table of games if the lighting was sorted.

It's an idea...

There are a few spotlights that he said could be repositioned onto
gaming tables, not sure if there are any in the end room though.
Lighting seemed fine through the rest of the room.
Clipboards might be a good idea for pen/paper role playing, could reduce table space needed.
I imagine we'd have to move tables ourselves, and it is a pretty narrow staircase so may not be easy.
lamp seems do-able
I'd rather settle in before putting forward demands, especially as it seems this is our only option, nice to have a welcoming manager

hense why i said :"see if they can 'help with any'
my point is i assume we are staying here indefinately, so we have to make it comfortable for ourselves to ensure we do not lose numbers, and everybody has an enjoyable evening.
