At least we will save money on petrolToday, on the way to her parents a funny thing happend when shell was driving the car. The engine stopped. And wouldn't start.
It turns out the Cam Belt snaped. As a result the pistons and other such moving parts in the engine decided it was party time, unrestrained on the other parts of the engine.
The engine is now a strange shape and will not go. So we have no car.
It is an ex car.
It is on -10 hit points, and has failed it's stabilsiation roll
It has lost all of it's health levels.
We would need the mechanical equivalent of a cleric (or a necromancer) to get back up and running.
This will provoke issues, especially for conception, so we thought that we would mention it here. We will also need a lift to and from the club if we are going to attend on a regular basis, but we will chat to people and sort that out ourselves.
yeah, this sucks, but we are trying to stay positive....

I'm sure most car owners winced on reading that...

Time is a great healer.
I hope it works out.
(I lost Cloe, my renault clio in a similar way. So my heart goes out)

I once helped a friend change the head on an engine that had suffered that fate. Messy, complicated, smelly too (oil and coolant mix, great). You have my sympathies with this.

Spoken to the garage? sounds like they screwed up.

I Don't know if that is even the sort of thing that they would be able to pick up on a service...

It's something that should be changed every so many thousands of miles (60,000? can't remember). I would've though the mechanic should've at least reminded you it needed changing, if it hadn't been changed recently.

mine went about 2 months after a service.
i specifically asked for my cam belt to be renewed, and the garage asked why i wanted that. i heard horror stories of clio's destroying themselves after (can't remember) miles with this problem.
garage man said this was rubbish but would replace for an extra £250.
Apparantly the labour charge was huge as the engione would have to be taken out as the cam belt was underneath several parts. stripped, put back in.
In short: its something you would specifically ask for, perhaps recommended after so many mile in your users manual.
But.... worth a try?

At least no-one was hurt (I assume that to be the case anyway)
You guys live in Ellesmere port don't you? Could you just take the train? Unlike myself you don't have to leave at 22:30 every night

It is something that should be changed every x0000 miles depending on car, I would expect them to check with you on a £400 service that you had had it done. Every major service I have had they have asked about it. If they have done it in September then according to Geoff you need to chase it as the part was still under warrenty. it was either mechanics error or faulty parts, either of which are the garages problem not yours.
And as for £250 changing it, I would get a second opinion, that smells of bs its a standard bit of work on any engine.

Matt, get several quotes I was only talking from experience in MY situation and on MY specific model of car.
Ian please be careful how you word things. I am not one to take offence from words but some might.

It's standard but very difficult. There's a cover over it that needs to be unbolted from several points around that side of the engine, the gears holding it in place are on springs pushing them out to keep it tight, you need to lock the engine so nothing inside moves while you're working and on some cars, you need to shift the engine to get enough room to do all this. Definitely shop around for other prices (dealer garages should not always be trusted) but £250 is not an unrealistic price.

The debate is pretty pointless I'm afraid chapps. As I mentioned, when the cam belt snapped the cylinders on the inside of the engine went out of control and damaged the engine from the inside. It's a dead car. The repairs cost more than the car is worth, in the last year we have had to replace the whole of the exaust (after it fell off on the way back from conception), spend £600 on a service, and now this. It is no longer worth keeping the car at this stage, and will save us money not to have it, especally when it comes to insurance, tax and petrol.

Gileh, maybe your the solution? How does one survive without a motorised vehicle?
And where is best for the sort of footwear required to travel the 15000 miles we use these wingless beasts for?

Uhh you get lifts
And wear light boots. Else your arms get tired out sooner and you drop into the Atlantic. But one of them should be able to get a student railcard, that might help a little.
