Far Dominion 26/09/11

Hi all,

As stated I'll be doing a few one shots for the next few Mondays to see what everyone wants to play. Last week was Leviathan (BRP Fantasy) and this coming Monday it will be Far Dominion.

Far Dominion is another one of my settings which has yet to be printed and involves 'Freebooters', or Adventurers, in the Antarctica of 1800. Not the ice covered single landmass we know today but the forested realms of Elven Empires, Dwarven holds, Orc horde camps, and ancient monsters set upon a smaller continent surrounded by islands (see map below).

With the colonial powers (Britain, France, Russia, Prussia and others) claiming portions of the landmass and the local human, elfyn, dwarf, troll, and orc cultures resisting, it's high adventure on the new frontier. Russian artillery fight with Royal Elves in the east, French cavalry clash with forest elves to the south, Prussian Jaegers go hand to hand with Dwarves in the north, and the British seek to dominate the men of Atlantean stock.
(Sharpe & Hornblower meets Middle-Earth basically)

"For Honour, Glory, & the prize!"

My Dark Heresy game isn't running tomorrow so I would be up for this if its a one evening thang!
steffworthington

cool! That's two players (I think lol)
Prostanc3

I am sure there will be others up for it, I am Chris by the way, was speaking with you about the D&D red box last week before everyone started gaming...

I'm off sick from work today, so it's a fairly safe bet I'm not going to be up for gaming this evening, I'm afraid.
steffworthington

im a little unsure about tonight as Andy has cried off so this means I only have one confirmed player (Prostanc3).

I'm only comfortable running games for 4+ and it seems that everyone is in a game already.

If anyone is free and fancies playing something a little different please put your name below. I'll give it a think whether it's worth me turning up if there's no takers.
Prostanc3

Your more likely to get people at the club wanting to play in person, I don't think a good portion of people actually check the forum!

You can count me in for any one shot tonight though.
Abjurant Champion

Count me in. It will be my first night at the club, so a one-shot would be excellent.

Thanks for all who turned up tonight. It was quite brutal and violent Smile

Thanks for running that game Steff, it was thoroughly enjoyable!

The game went something like this (correct me if wrong)... The party began in Jefferson at the local Inn eating and drinking the remainder of the coin from our previous adventures, however, the gold lining our pockets was wearing thin. It was at this point we were approached by a chap looking to hire a group of mercenaries on behalf of a British Lord (I can’t remember their names).

Our mission; Open a dialogue with the Abala people to the North to allow the British to settle a territorial dispute with them.
Our reward; £200 for each member of the party.

We had been arranged transport on a Russian Brig named ‘The Swift’ to the port of Sutherland to the north but before we set sail we used some of the information gained from our initial contact to stock up on small items deemed valuable in Abala such as needles and lanterns (which used a trade system so the money we had would have only been worth the weight of the coin).

We then set sail and despite ‘The Swift’ having a fairly interesting crew on board including a fearsome Russian duchess who was rumoured to be having an affair with the hardy looking Captain (no pun intended) the journey of approximately three days passed without event and we soon arrived at Sutherland.

From there we travelled by horse back to Abala although we were initially given a shoddy horse and cart that upon successful inspection was deemed inadequate and thus unlikely to make the 4-5 day journey without breaking and potentially leaving us up a certain creek without an object for propulsion!

After travelling through the disputed territory en route to Abala and witnessing the destruction caused by the burning of farm stead’s, homes and the slaughtering of live stock we arrived at Abala and met with our Elder Elven contact who was to arrange an audience with the King of Abala the following day.

After obtaining some local garments from the Market so we could look less outlandish during our audience we followed our new friend who showed us to our apartment for the night and after a meal we said our goodbyes and settled down for the night, however, the night was not to pass without event.

We where shook awake by one of our sleep troubled comrades who drew our attention to light outside of the window despite it obviously still being the middle of the night and we were quick to discover that the light was from torches of those outside who where making an effort to be stealthy in climbing the stairs to our apartment, weapons drawn, we positioned ourselves to defend and as they entered the room by smashing the door we met them with equal such aggression by kicking the contents of a brazier in to the faces of those first to enter.

The battle raged on and due to a couple of initial crack shots and a valiant charge towards the door we managed to keep our new friends contained within the doorway of the apartment making their greater numbers count for nothing as we battled away in the red glow of the spilt embers.

Eventually the remaining mix of locals and Elves turned tail and fled after sustaining heavy losses, we decided not to give chase in to the night as without our newly befriended door way we stood little chance of success, victory was however over shadowed by the death of one of our party, not entirely by the hands of our enemy but rather by an unsuccessful leap to the next building from our second story apartment, evidently its then rather hard to defend yourself from attack with two broken legs!

We proceeded to flee the scene of the battle and after a short series of deceptive questions amongst the morning hustle and bustle of the Market place we managed to locate our contact at his home, he offered us his basement to lay low for a few days however we had lost trust in him after the previous nights events and rightly so as after we left his home we decided to keep an eye on his home from a safe distance away and it was then that we spotted one of survivors from the nights battle enter his home.

We agreed as a group (well the 3 that remained) that the audience with the King was not going to happen and decided to make a sharp withdrawal from Abala and thus ending our session.

The above turned in to more of a short story than a summary but hopefully it gives everyone a little insight in to the game also my English isn’t the best so avoid nit picking if possible!  Razz

Nice! That pretty much sums up the night...
apart from the ship was called 'The Akula' (Ru: 'Shark').

Glad you enjoyed it! Might run 2300AD next week.
Prostanc3

Really, I am sure you said 'Swift' not entirely sure where I got that from then!
steffworthington

i may have said it was a swift brig, but its always been called the akula.

Highlight of my night was Nathaniel's decidedly unheroic leap from the balcony in the face of hopeless odds, resulting in a pair of snapped femurs. Would have stood a better chance with Other Nathaniel (my humble self)'s heroic (suicidal?) charge of the doorway :p

Yeah that tickled me in a big way, such an introduction to RPGs! The door charge was fun, if only all 4 of us would of stuck with that plan rather than base jumping!

To be fair, he tried to jump and fumbled the roll... and then tried a 'jump' roll to try and land with minimal injuries but failed that too. Fates were against him really.

He didn't exactly use gravity to punch through the cobbled streets to the underworld below which is kinda like what they make it sound like lol

Very Happy
