HANGMAN CLOSING!!! - UPDATED new venue optionsHi All,
I'm afraid I have some very bad news for everyone, Gary is moving out of the Hangman pub, and has only been able to give us Very limited notice.
This Monday (April 11th) will be the last games night at the Hangman. It is unlikely a new owner - as yet unspecified - will offer the room to us as Gary believes the venue is to be turned into a wine bar.
Gary hopes to take over a new venue with a room large enough to allow for us to move with him, but in the meantime we will need to hunt for somewhere new as quickly as possible. I will be contacting the Catholic Club (an old back up from when the Deva let us down) as a short term plan but they are unable to offer us the room every Monday night.
If anyone can recommend a venue please get back to Ian or myself as soon as you can. Please keep in mind:
Size of room
Proximity to train station
Price of room
Price of drinks
Stickiness of tables
...arguably in that order.

Why such short notice? I don't suppose we have any contract with them do we? When is the Hangman actually closing?
|
Tess

1: He was not expecting things to move so quickly
2: Nope, no contract
3: Mid-week next week (I'm not certain of the exact day)

Thanks for the response. There's no harm in approaching the new owner and asking (I'm pretty sure Gary will know who that is by Mon if he's closing the place next week) I heard the metal night is being booted out as well. I'll have a think about anywhere that might be able to help.

I've posted it to the Facebook page.
Initial suggestions:
Town Crier
Whatever the Deva Mail Social Club is called now
There are a few pubs in Hoole that are probably not much further away from the station, but I don't know if any of them hire out rooms, e.g. The Faulkner, Bromfield Arms.

I guess someone may already have this in mind, but we have 4 tables and at least 2 uplighters currently at the Hangman.

Ian and I shall be meeting up tomorrow to hunt for a new venue. To speed up the process and to keep things looking (somewhat) professional I feel it is best to be just the two of us, but we would very much appreciate any suggestions you guys have. If those suggestions came along with telephone numbers and names that a bonus.
We will have a chance to discuss our findings on Monday night, no decisions will be made before consulting the club as a whole (or as many as show up this Monday)

Me and Tess will be doing a pub crawl on sat to look at options. We'll speak to you all monday. Any thoughts on options? What about prices, if we ahve to pay more then £1 what would people be willing to pay?

the laugh inn (formerly deva) has been converted into a comedy club, the room we used to use is now a large auditorium room with stage and rows of chairs, it looks pretty unlikely as a venue. They also have mondays reserved for touring shows, not sure how frequent these are.

We're currently generating a surplus, so I'd say we're 'safe' to go for somewhere marginally more expensive. I'd be willing to pay a bit more (£1.50-£2), but it depends on drinks prices too I guess.

That Sucks!
Have we considered contacting these guys regarding the venue they use? I know they have been in contact with us regarding magic stuff, but i don't know if anyone has actually gone to them or not. They may have a suitable venue though.

Nooooooooo!
I'd be willing to pay more if need be. I'd imagine Paz's suggestion of £1.50-£2 would be managable.

I have never actually been in but have spoken to people who told me it was smaller then what we currently use and not broken up in any way so will be louder. We will be taking a look though.

Ill be contacting a few places off this list tonight or tommorow. But Im not expecting a response before monday. most of them seem a little expensive but we can try and negotiate for a repeat booking.

Not sure what I can contribute further to this save to say that whatever room I have available in Chester I will make open for club use while the move takes place.

What we have found out...Good news!!We have a couple of options!
Flodersbrook(sp?)
Pros
Free to use!!
Close to station
Good atmosphere
Nice bar staff
Big room
Some parking
Cons
Not exclusive use
Tables may limit some games(4th ed)
Expensive(ish) soft drinks
I think we have found our new pub for nights out, but lacking exclusive use I think kills it.
Railway Inn
Pros
Close to station
Average Drinks prices
Same price as now
Free Car park across the road
Average drinks prices
Exclusive Use
COns
two smaller rooms rather then one(is this a con?)
Tables may limit some games(4th ed)
My personal favourite, will go back Monday and look/ask about tables
Catholic Club
Pros
Big room
Close to station
Average Drinks prices
Big tables
Exclusive Use
Cons
No parking
We are still not sure about availability for this one, will call in on Monday if we dont get a phone call
Frog and nightingale
We are looking at the room on Monday
Tess anything to add?

Is there a room upstairs at the Boot or am I imagining that?

Jimmy

I believe there may be but it will be haunted

Just to say what everybody else is thinking: thanks for making such a comprehensive search and putting in so much time for the sake of the club today.

Thanks for the search efforts, .
I don't know that I'm amazing keen on another pub, any response from the places on Paz's list?
This said I'd prefer The Cathoilc Club over The Railway Inn, this is just from the impression you get from the outside. I may of course be utterly mistaken, having never been inside.

No reply from the palace yet but they do say work hours. Catholic club is probably preference but they have something else on one week in 4. We need to speak to them again as manager was not in

The palace is a no go, they are already hired on a Monday. I will give the catholic club and confirm their status later, we are checking the frog and Nightingale and calling back into the railway in tonight to confirm a few bits.
The only venue we are aware of and have not checked is Stanley Palace, this will involve us having to get public liability insurance and will be much more expensive. Do people even want me to bother?
Meeting about 7:30 tonight, we will try and keep it short.

My 2 centsFirstly, thanks guys for spending your personal time looking into alternative venues - it is very appreciated. As I won't be there in time for the meeting (unless it goes on a bit), I'll just say that I think car parking at least fairly nearby is essential. I think quantity is more important that distance - I'd rather have an easy time parking 1-2 minutes walk away than have a couple of spaces out front that will be full by the time I get there.

Thanks for checking these places out.
For those places with smaller tables (e.g. Railway Inn) would they be amenable to us using/storing our tables there?
Do we know who's going to look after our tables for the next few days/weeks/months? I can make room in my boot to take a couple of them away tonight, but my garage is packed full as it is.

We are calling into the railway in to ask as we forgot at the time.
I can find space in my garage for now, we will discuss tonight.

My additonal opinons to add to Ian's write up of our Saturday Chester tour:
Flookersbrook:
Pros
Really friendly
Big room
'rock pub' atmosphere and clientelle
Cons
Not able to block 'our' section off from the other
Everyone else will walk through to use the toilets
My second favourite option
Railway Inn:
Pros
Reiterating the ease of parking
wall between two decent sections of room will reduce noise
Comfy sofa-chairs around many tables
Exclusive bar and toilet access
COns
Some tables may be small but can be put together to make enough room
My personal favourite as well
Catholic Club:
Pros
Very Clean!
Cons
Customers have to 'buzz in' which may put off nervous new members
still not sure about availability
Frog and nightingale:
TBA

We have looked into non-pub venues but there seem to be issues of opening / hiring hours, prices, insurances and so on that are not insurmountable but make them less desirable. Plus a number of members enjoy a pint or two... or three with their game, and if people wanted to bring their own alcohol there may be further licensing problems.
I think this is something worth bringing up tonight and if people are generally keen on moving away from the pub atmosphere we can investigate the options more thoroughly.

Fair enough .
I think my main problem with pubs is the 'random' person element (or in the case of the Deva the occasionally downright antagonistic).
Not a biggie.
Thanks once again to you & Ian .

Pub positives:
Easy to find
Easy to get in
Cheap
No insurance issues etc.
Drinks on tap
We don't have to worry too much about being told off for not leaving things in a pristine state
Opening hours work well with our times
Pub negatives:
Hit & miss on tables and chairs (although we have our 4 tables)
Often no food allowed
No drinks brought in
Sometimes noisy
Sometimes dirty
Random people (although it's not been a problem for a while)
All in all, I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

I feel this increases the likelihood of new members (i.e the people from the open mic night coming up to try it out for a week) whilst people with no intention to join in can be turned away with the right word from the right person - this can be minimised by having an exclusive room, and by choosing a venue with the right kind of monday night regulars in situ.

Did we get all of our stuff out of the Hangman in the end?

4 tables, 3 lights and an extension socket were taken; I assume that was everything
