Help me pass my Graphic Design FdA! Part II!

Hello All ,

Another thought provoking and (hopefully) fun survey. This time we're talking about Science Fiction and Fantasy Books.

The survey question is What Are Your Top Ten Most Crucial Science Fiction or Fantasy Books? By crucial it could mean things you think are historically important, things that got you interested in the genre, things your bookshelf couldn't do without or things you just plain like. This will go into deciding what titles I tackle and do covers for at the end of the project, so you might even see your suggestion redesigned!

The link is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HPJGQBR

Feel free to fill is as many or write as much as you like. Constructive comments below are welcome Smile

OK, I'm going to add author and whether I believe it's fantasy or sci-fi, as tat's not specified in your questions but is most certainly relevant...

I would also like toregister, although I have no idea if it's relevant, that I do not believethatfantasy and science fiction are a genre. They are two genres, and I hate the fact that they are always lumped together, often underonly one of the two titles, in book shops. It's completely unrealistic and dumb. The Belgariad, for instance, has nothing to do with science fiction, and while most science fiction books which deal with the future could be called "fantastic" they are not "fantasy" - they deal with logical and possible permutations and extrapolations of current technology and science (both cultural and physical).

As a hard sci-fi fan, I would also like to say that I believe there is a third genre - science-fantasy, where on the surface it *looks* as tho it'#s based on science, when in fact it's pure fantasy. Star Wars would be an excellent example of this. It is not really science fiction, it's more science fantasy.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks

Very interesting points, you two. (By genre in the OP I meant genre of that particular book)

Feel free to add as much detail about your choices as you like- the form is limited because of the technology- any detail you add will inform my thinking on the project. If you want me to email you a word copy of the form just say and it shall be done Smile

Is the fact that Science fiction and fantasy get lumped together reinforced by the cover designs? Does Hard Sci-FI get more varied, more 'respectable'  or better covers  than Science Fantasy? Have a look at the blog http://scifiantasyuncovered.blogspot.com/ and see what you think!
