Leigh's Miniatures Idea

Okay, for a while now I've floated the notion of having a bank of miniatures that people can use for various games. It's not workable at a level of group ownership because that takes too much to administrate.

HOWEVER

I would be happy to own a bunch of miniatures and loan them out, bring them in in boxes that list the contents so they can be counted in or out. I like little miniatures and toy soldiers, especially in single colours.

BUT

Is there any need for this in the group? Does anybody actually struggle to provide varied and representative minis for their games? Please let me know your experiences below.

See you tomorrow.

i like the idea, as i have no money!

i recently bought hero quest especially for the figures but when i unpacked it all the figures had escaped.
i know they had escaped because all that was left was one goblin, so i torchered him and he told me that they had managed to get out whilst in the boot of my car "and are now in a better place ha ha arghhhhh"

Might be able to float it under the half price...thing, as long as you agree to bring them when asked/each week.  Even though it is not a board game, I can imagine several miniature challenged people (like myself) agreeing to such a proposal.  Very Happy

Well it's not a jointly owned thing- it's been established that won't work. I want the minis I want to own them. What I was asking is if it's worth my bringing them in on a weekly basis.
Shaphron

The 50% cost thing does not equal jointly owned - whoever buys the stuff, owns them outright, the vlub simply says you have to bring them along fairly regularly (you are allowed to forget sometimes!) so that others in the club can use it - basically, you can;t use it to buy something you wont bring to the club, but if you want to bring it to the club anyway, then it should work fine. Can't see why miniatures would be a problem, as we've already had a lot of pepople show support for the idea. The only stipulation is you have to get agreement from the treasurer *before* you buy the game, and then supply and receipt (or copy of it) for club records. You also have to get at least 6 (this is the old number, we have not voted on a new number yet, so I'm going with the old number) of club members to agree that this is a good idea. Does that make it sound easier for you Gileh?

For now, I'm okay just sepnding 3quid on 40 miniatures on my own. Collecting stuff is an odd fetish, like that.

But you could be spending £1.50 on 40 minatures  Wink  That is almost the price of a pint of the Deva's awful pepsi!  Shocked

I'd be reasonably interested in getting a generic minature pool as well, as long as I can get that kind of price.  Though tbh, I really don't mind using chessmen, as whenever I look at a minature map, I only think of the positions, and don't pay a blind bit of notice to what they actually look like.
Gileh

Progress!

I now have 106 miniatures here, soon to be 160, soon after to be nearly 200. I am making an index and catalog of them in this format:
Quote:
Genre: Character (TV, Comics)
Fantasy
Pre-Historic
Ancient (12,000BCE - 400AD)
Historical (400 - 1900AD)
Modern
Steampunk (Including Alternate Present)
Cyberpunk
Far Future

Model: Colour (or Painted) and one-line description

Codes: CM####

I will post a PDf of the catalog when it is reasonably finished (3 of seven pages down) and that way people will be able to browse and request stuff. It's very roughly layed out, with 16 minis a page, scanned directly to make it a 1:1 scale on the print out. My scanner is rubbish so the pics are blurry, but they are good enough for you to get the idea of what each mini looks like. For storage/transport I will prolly split them by genre, as that will further help people find what they want.

Download catalogue

So there we are so far. Later I will make a much neater catalogue (all grid systems and templates. Coming soon - 14 pcs of Heroquest furniture, 40 D&D board game minis, 39 heroequest minis. Possibly also space crusade and 1:64 scale civilians.

142 minis and counting

156 inc furniture

The link doesn't work  Twisted Evil .

The complete collection at present can be seen here:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/leighwoosey/ctaloguepages.pdf

And that link DOES work. The pages get more and more organised and readable as they go along

We have 317 minis in total
Highlights include:
28 villainous humans- evil knights and spell casters, about of which 15 archers
48 good humans, inc adventurers, about of which 15 archers
32 Orcs
26 Undead
26 Goblin, 8 archers
40 modern or scifi figures inc Dr Who
18 bigish monsters, ranging from a dragon to hunched ogres
14 pieces of Dungeon Furniture

Also, because I am such a clever clever bod, I have made large monster bases out of plasticard. They are sized for the D&D size categories- 5x Large and one Each of Huge, Gargantuan and Colossal. There is whitetac in one of the boxes of miniatures and the idea is a that you take some whitetac and stick the monster with a small base on to the right sized base for its supposed size. There are misc warhammer square, round, regiment and cavalry bases in a bag as well.

What I want to know now is what do people want from the collection- what things do you need but sometimes struggle to represent?
The minis come with me every Monday and are left on a table for you to look through and use. There is also a complete Darkworld game- a simple dungeon crawler that is very 3D and pretty looking that I can bring in on request.

Catalogue Updated

To reflect 15 new additions, just click the same link as before. There is also an index in *.xls format so you can search, sort and look up what is in there.

Let me know what you think.
Gileh

Both links updated to include 22 new models.
Gileh

I won't be there tonight, so won't be bringing the stuff in. If you want the collection for some reason pm me asap (before 6).
Gileh

If ppl actually want to use the mini's collection can the PM me and I'll bring it in- saves me lugging it around every week.
Gileh

Selling it.

Actually, if anyone wants to BUY the miniature collection off me they are welcome two. About 30-40 miniatures and some maps were donated for the purpose of use by the club- and would have to stay available in some capacity. The rest I purchased myself and would happily part with for 40 or so quid. Including darkworld, the remains of dragon strike and some paraphernalia.

What is the reason for the sale of the figs?
Is the Library not being used?
Could you gain small amounts of monies from renting out minitures for a specific length of time (eg can i have 10 mini's for 4 week campaign of d&d in return for paying your subs and/or a drink?)

Shame to see this has not worked for you, as I think the club could benefit from it longterm especially when large numbers of badies/ civs are needed or for specific baddies.

Maybe we could raise it at the club?

I actually quite like that idea, we could even give a title like 'sentinel of the minatures'  Very Happy

On the question of selling them though:
a) Would you be willing to sell part of the collection?
b) Can you tell me how many of the large minatures have 2"x2" base and whether you have any larger?
c) What size of container does your minature collection currently occupy?

I've done all I can with it and don't want to feel tied to it, especially if I feel like I need to take a break from the club for a few weeks.

Nope.

That's a bit complicated for me. I'd rather have the cash for the minis and somoene else take the responsibility for the shared stuff.

a) Would you be willing to sell part of the collection?
All or nothing- I can't manage to sort things for separate sale and I don't want hangers on

b) Can you tell me how many of the large minatures have 2"x2" base and whether you have any larger?
One plasticard base for each of the D&D sizes, plus three more of Large. There are a selection of warhammer 1"x2" cavalry bases. White tac to attach things.

c) What size of container does your minature collection currently occupy?
All of that big bag I used to carry around, in various boxes. The bag is £10 Extra. It is a good bag.

as I think the club could benefit from it longterm especially when large numbers of badies/ civs are needed or for specific baddies.
It was a good idea, and fun to build up, but I think it's become a bit of a burden for me now. I'd rather the cash than the minatures.
ian jones

1) is it the carrying of stuff to venue?
solution book 1 week prior
2)or storage?
solution unknown?

If you are still desperate to part with the likkle fellows then maybe the solution is to sell in smaller amounts at the club maybe auction style in groups of 10 to 20 similar figs and larger creatures seperate. I bet you would get far more than £40 on 317minis? I for one could not afford £40 before christmas but would be willing to spend upto £5? gauge peoples responce maybe? .
Gileh

Well the option to buy it off me is here should people want to with their Christmas money. If getting rid of it is more hassle than keeping it then it shall remain here, ready to be called upon. Although perhaps the AGM should remind people that if they want it they should ask me- either the week before or by TXT message or internet. They could give out my number for those not on forums, so long as it doesn't end up signed up for a sex chat line or anything.

Catalog updated with an extra page of minis, from a while back. Also Facebooked. Can we have a sticky on Club Business saying how to get the minis and providing the links?

Cheers
