Magic the Gathering - Booster Draft 30th August. Please post if you're interested.
| WoTC wrote: | Booster Draft. Booster Draft is more complicated than Sealed Deck. Each player at the table starts with three unopened booster packs. Instead of just opening your cards and building a deck, you and the other players at the table have to draft the cards for your decks.
At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can’t see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted.
Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again. At the end of the draft, each player has forty-five cards-and unlimited basic lands-to build a deck with. |
So we would need three packs per player approx cost £9.45:

Above is for illustrative purposes. Would people want any particular block?
Tournament structure to be worked out when we find out how many are in.

Booster drafts are fun! Count me in.

booster boxes can be had on ebay for £80, which works out around £2.20 a booster, or £6.60 a booster draft.
Also if you research cube drafting, this is a method of booster drafting using an existing card collection instead of booster packs, but needs one person with a large enough collection to build the cube.

Yeah, I would definitely be interested. Have no real preference for block, though I do like dedindahed's suggestion of ebay. Might be worth looking around to see what can be found on there.
Also, yeah, 30th August might be better, since it will be hard to organise for 31st May.

It would be fun to join in, but money is (as ever) an Issue.

So how about:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MTG-10TH-ED...gCards_RL&hash=item563adfe4c3
16 @ about £2.49 ea.
or
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Magic-Gathe...gCards_RL&hash=item439f323e31
36 @ about £1.53 ea. (currently)
9th edition boosters seem to be relatively cheap.
We don't need to actually commit to these, I'm just putting them up for discussion purposes.
If we do decide to go ahead, I don't mind buying them up front, as long as there's a reasonable expectation of getting the money back over time.

It might be an idea for some-one (the club or whoever is organising) to see if they can buy a job lot of basic land, as that way people who have been learning to play but don't have much land of their own can join in.

I have a bucket load and I definitely won't need it all so I'll bring the rest along for people to borrow.

To summarize so far (adding in stuff from last night):
In the Booster draft:
Teflon Billy
Mat (Wolves)
Kamikazegerbil
dedindahed
metagaia?
Cost about £1.50 - £2.50 per booster. So about £4.50 - £7.50 per draft.
Mat (Wolves) & Kamikazegerbil, happy to supply basic lands.
Date 30th August, starting about 3pm? (I'm not sure how long these things generally take).
Please post if anything needs changing.
Best bet at the moment:

That seems doable. You can sign me and shell up as well!
Also, we are going to make contact with Shell's brother who is currently living in our old university town. We're going to ask him to go into the local hobby shop (who has a rediculous back stock of magic cards and very little stock movement) to see if they would do us a deal on a booster box.
We'll let you know how that turns out!

No problem .

Looks like £55 is the price to beat.

Dai in Aber has not managed to give a better deal than you've already found on a booster box, so it's up to you to organise getting it. It's a shame really, as we know he's got lots of old stock, but he presumably can't afford to reduce the costs too much...
You're not going to run out of space in this one are you?

I'm sure that's within my capabilities .

I think we're probably going to have to start around 5.30 - 6pm, if the 'trial run' is anything to go by.
I'm assuming that people want to draft for a mass multi-player game.
|
Kamikazegerbil
|
I do enjoy the big free-for-all games and it did work nicely on Monday but if time allows some sort of Tournament format might be a nice change of pace.
It's down to what everyone wants and what we think there is time for though.

I'm happy either way, but a tournament format would undoubtedly take longer.
As you say it depends on what people want to do, and how early they could get there.
I've ordered:
http://www.thecardcellar.co.uk/mt...betrayers-of-kamigawa-p-4295.html
£54.95 for 36,
approx £1.53 ea
£4.58 per 'draft'.
Should be with me shortly .
*Update Booster Box has arrived.

To be honest, I prefer dueling over multi-player games as a preference, but I am willing to go with the majority.
|
Teflon Billy
|
If we just ask Wolves Matt, Saphron & Metagaia (or if your reading this please express a preference ) on Monday and then go from there.
As I've said I'm happy with either .
|
metagaia
|
Well with more than 4 players, I would prefer 1-1 games since that way we can make it feel more like a tournament (maybe Swiss style?)
|
Teflon Billy
|
So the majority seems to be with a tournament, so lets go with that. We need to now hammer out timing, structure & general rules.
From the discussion last night, we think it’s going to take approx 5 hrs so if Metagaia’s hard leave time (and probably mine as well) is 10.30 that means starting about 5.30pm.
First question: Is a start time of about 5.30 doable for everyone?
|
HDimagination
|
Well for us it will be conditional upon the busses or getting a lift, but as it's the bank holiday, there shouldn't be any problems either way.
|
Teflon Billy
|
| HDimagination wrote: | | ...shouldn't be any problems either way. |
Other general rules (still up for discussion), but these were the suggestions:
Duels:
Max duel time 30 mins.
If no winner after this:
1: Gentlepersons agreement over who would ‘win’.
2: If no agreement, then highest life total.
Mulligans:
One free mulligan (then lose a card each time)
Tournament structure:
Sadly a bit awkward because there are seven of us,
Options so far:
Basic elimination (with one random person getting a free pass on the first round).
A 'Swiss style' points system, not quite sure what form this would take.
|
HDimagination
|
Sounds great. I would go for basic elimination, just because it is easest to work out that way.
|
Teflon Billy
|
.
I'm fine with basic elimination, seems the easiest way to go.
|
Teflon Billy
|
Rafe has expressed an interest in joining in.
So we've got even numbers people .
|
Teflon Billy
|
Sadly it doesn't look like dedindahed can make it so we are back down to 7 .
Thinking about the tournament structure, do people want to play off for places if they've lost a match? Or break out into general Magic playing?
|
HDimagination
|
I think that the new Mat (who I was playing with on monday) expressed an interest. That would put us up to even numbers.
|
Teflon Billy
|
. I think he was christened 'Ninja Matt'. If we confirm his interest on Monday, that should put us back up to 8.
|
Shaphron
|
I think both playing off for places and / or general magic are good - we could decide on the day. I think I'd like to suggest that we start at maybe 4:30, instead of 5:30, as that gives us more time, and possibly werewolves at the end.
|
Teflon Billy
|
Sadly, the earliest I can make it is 5.30.
|
Lannister Man
|
I'll play.

Welcome Tez . You've read the thing about it costing money right?
If you could introduce yourself to me some time. Even though I've read some of your posts I must admit I don't actually know who you are .
Ok so there's going to be about between 6-9 of us. Sadly it looks like there's some uncertainty around Rafe + Ninja Matt.

Hey guys it's Ninja Matt here
Crazily trying to post on a forum using my blackberry, hope it works.
I would be up for the draft on the 30th I'll make sure I have some lands available for myself-these are in short supply so I will not be able to lend any out.
I hope this works out well .
I'll rarely be able to remember this forum address, but will try to log in as and when prompted
See you guys soon.

I was also in tonight, randomly walking around with nothing to do. I'm sure most of you wondered who I was. Purple t-shirt playing with a chain on my jeans and sat on $y blackberry writing these messages hehe.
Again, see you next Monday, I'll bring along wfrpg too in case there are any more like me with nothing to do.
In light of the draft...moneys on the day?

Tez is out, so we have a confirmed group of seven (which means someone gets a free pass on the first round).
It seems sensible to close entry now as we're finalizing details and making sure we've got enough land for everyone.
I'd like to have a brief chat around 7.20-7.30ish on Monday, just to iron out any details etc. If that's ok with anyone, shouldn't take long.
|
Shaphron

It's fine so long as we're there. Can't promise for 7:30, but it's likely.

rafe

As i said on monday, ill know for definite tomorrow afternoonish if im available.
I can bring what land i have available, its gonna be enough for myself, but i dont have much spare, it might just ease it up for others sharing.

Winner: Wolves Matt! Congratulations! .
Runner up: Kamikazegerbil .
Suggestions for next time:
Probably time enough to have 3 rounds in each duel - given same start time.
Perhaps buying 3 boosters packs ea. (probably somewhat more expensive per-pack, but avoids the leftovers packs issue, (though all were 'sold' last night)).
|
Shaphron
|
Or buying a box, and we split the cost equally amongst us all, and give out the extra packs as prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place ?
