I'm confused by the variety of opinions I'm hearing/reading.
I'm a reasonably keen Stargate fan, preferred Atlantis over SG1, but the later SG1s were pretty good.
Help.

It's terrible, avoid it like the plague

It's fantastic, hop on board and watch the first season in one go!
Okay I've probably said this before, but to clarify:
AFAICT Stargate universe is different in tone from the other SG series. It tells different stories with a different emphasis. So if you go in expecting more of the same you will be disappointed. Even if you go in with an open mind you will probably find it jarring. It's not light hearted fun. The heroes don't always win out, they are not good-at-heart (YMMV). That's what I like about it, but then I didn't get into SG1 and SGA because they seemed to have those very qualities.

Welp, I've never watched Stargate in a serious manner, but i actually enjoyed SGU. They did a good job of not wimping out on the premise of being stranded several galaxies away from home and being limited in resorces. There is a well developed cast, even if you'd wish that some of the supporting characters would get a bit more screentime instead of boring Lieutenant Whitebread McBlanderson and his girlfiend Twiggy von Damsel. This is more than made up for by the presence of a very spikey Robert Carlyle As Dr Rush, The resident Tricky Scientist who plays off very well with Louis Ferreira as Colonel Young, the over his head commander of the military on the ship.
It is a bit slow to start, and is by no means perfect, being very much a 'first season' show trying to find it's legs. They do however do a great job of realising the questions that the viewers are thinking and answering them promptly, No lost or heroes style strinning things along here. I have high hopes for the next series, and I think that it is probably better to have a show that starts off with a few rough edges and then grows the beard than one that has an inexorable nosedive after season one (heroes). Fingers crossed, this one won't dissapoint. Oh, for my money, give it until about episode 11 before you give up on it if the first few episodes don't impress. Episode 14 is by far the best of the series.
